The people behind the new Florida Gulf Coast Center for Fishing and Interactive Museum in Largo, Jana and Jim Simons, pose here with the tasty and colorful hogfish. The Simons’ believe strongly that children can learn life lessons through fishing, and their not-for-profit Center is already proving it.
Fishing clubs established in schools across Florida, and soon in Georgia, are underway. The Simons have inventive plans for camping programs, school projects, a culinary school and more.
A place where settlers once cooked, and sat down to eat abundant Florida food, preserved at the remarkable Pinellas County Heritage Village in Largo. 21 acres of pine and palmetto, filled with historic buildings, each with a story to tell, many with a food historic bent.
